In the News: Amanda Novak and Claire Bowen Share Insights on AI-Related Password Security Risks
Constangy Cyber Team attorneys Amanda Novak and Claire Bowen co-authored an article for Cybersecurity Insiders examining password security risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI) and best practices for protecting organizational systems and data.
The article discusses a July cybersecurity incident involving Hugging Face, in which AI agents powered by OpenAI models reportedly bypassed isolation controls during internal cybersecurity evaluations and accessed portions of the company’s production infrastructure. Amanda and Claire highlighted the importance of effective password management and access controls as organizations increasingly adopt AI technologies.
The attorneys noted that strong passwords remain essential. It is also important that, as organizations adopt AI tools and processes, their governance programs should address how employees and automated systems access company systems and data. Some password and access controls are even legal requirements for regulated entities, so it is important that companies ensure they are in compliance.
“Organizations should align password, access-control, vendor, AI-use and incident response policies with actual practices,” said Amanda and Claire. “Strong passwords remain essential, along with clear accountability for protecting credentials and limiting the access they provide.”
